Removing the related videos at the end of a YouTube video

The easiest and fastest way to get a video onto your web site or blog is to upload it to YouTube and stream it from there. But you may have noticed that when the video ends, it shows related videos, some of which could be your competitor! But there is a trick that you can use to avoid that. Here is how you do it.

Go to the YouTube video that you want and click the button that says Embed. When you do that, the HTML embed code pops up. But before you copy the code to paste into your page or blog, uncheck the box that says Include Related Videos. Then paste that code in normally. That way, when the your video ends on your page, it will not display any related videos.

How to use YouTube to promote your business

YouTube is a site that allows you to upload videos for free. They make their money from advertising revenues. If you look at it the other way around, you are providing them with free video content. So, it's a good relationship and one that I encourage for my clients.

Before you start recording videos with your web cam or your digital camera, please stop! Yes, YouTube is a wonderful place for amateur videos of dogs and babies, but that is not how you want your business to be represented. On the other hand, a video on YouTube isn't the same thing as the old boring promotional videos of yesterday. Good production values are nice, but a long introduction isn't the way to go. YouTube isn't a movie theater, or a business meeting room and people don't need time to settle down. On YouTube, if your video doesn't start giving good information in the first few seconds, people will click away.

If you want to know how to do it right, take a look at my client motivational speaker Joel Weldon. This is how you do it.

Putting a video on your Google Blog

If you have videos uploaded to YouTube, you can put them here on Google Blogger. To do this, go to your video on YouTube and look for a button that says "embed". When you select that button, the embed code is revealed, which is HTML. Copy that, and in your Blogger post, click on "Edit HTML", which is at the upper right, in the tab next to "Compose".
Copy the embed code and in your Blogger post, click on "Edit HTML" in the upper right, next to "Compose" and paste it in. Return to compose, publish your post, and you now have a video right in your post. Here I am drawing caricatures. Video by Bryan Matuskey.

Voting up comments on YouTube

The next time you are watching a YouTube video, be sure to sign in and "vote up" a comment that you like. I've just noticed this feature, and it brings useful and thoughtful comments up to the top, instead of the rude and hateful comments that we have been suffering looking at for years. I haven't had the opportunity to "vote down" a rude, crude or racist remark on YouTube, but I will. I have been "voting up" good comments. To do this, all you have to do is to click the little "thumbs up button" next to the comment.

Most people appreciate the effort that goes into posting a video on YouTube, and don't see it as an appropriate place for obscene comments. The obscene comments are not removed, they are just moved down.

A great idea from YouTube!

Why I switched back to Safari from Firefox

I've been a big fan of Firefox for a long time. I liked the interface, I liked Mozilla's attitude. I was even willing to put up with the fact that Firefox can't view pdf files - I figured that they would fix that soon enough, but they never did. But the most recent update of Firefox has pushed me back to Safari. I did the "I have that problem, too" button several times for Firefox bugs, but today I just had had enough.

In addition to the several bugs that the latest Firefox has, they moved a bunch of stuff around. I know it sounds petty, but I was used to the home button, the refresh button, etc. being in a logical place. And for some strange reason, the web address appears down on the lower left of the page in a little yellow box when you hover over a hyperlink. This is at the corner of my eye, and it's just plain annoying. And, I don't know why, they now have the tabs above the bookmarks, not below. If you are used to tabbed browsing, this just makes no sense. Your eye has to go past your bookmarks to the tabs above. Just poor design. They had it right before, I wonder what went wrong?

What Facebook is

Facebook is very popular. But if you have never used it, and other people are encouraging you to, you may wonder why? People may say, "you can send messages, or pictures" and you would say, "I can already do that in an email, so what's the difference?"

The difference between sending emails (with messages and pictures) and posting them on Facebook is the difference between knocking on the door of every house on your book versus putting a great big sign on your lawn.

On the web, that "great big sign" is Facebook. Instead of emailing a message to your brother in Tallahassee, and your high school friend in Paris, etc., you just post the message to what Facebook calls "your wall". Think of it like pinning up a bunch of Polaroid photos with messages written underneath it on a sign that people can walk by. That's how it works.

What people don't like about posting messages and pictures onto the web is that anyone can see them. But this is what makes Facebook so cool - it requires permission can see them. And only you can give that permission, to your friends.

If you have a lot of friends, or a large family, this makes the whole process of sharing information so much easier, and that's why Facebook is so popular.

Should you use Facebook for your business?

Many of my clients want to know if they should use Facebook to help promote their businesses. Generally, I say, no, it's a waste of time, but there are exceptions. Keep in mind that if you do use Facebook, it requires a regular commitment. Creating a Facebook page and then never going back to post anything on it looks, well, kind of sad. On the other hand, it can be a challenge to constantly think of things to say and post if your business is not appropriate for Facebook use.

Facebook is for friends. It helps people stay in touch, share their lives, and share their photos. That's what it does best, and for that, nothing else comes close. That's part of the reason that so many people use Facebook. We like being connected to our friends and family. We like seeing pictures of that big party that we were unable to go to, or of the wedding of our cousin in Australia. And it's nice to be able to post pictures on Facebook and tell everybody to go see them, rather than sending out an endless round of "attachments" in email. If you use Facebook, you know what I mean. If you don't use Facebook personally, I would recommend against using it for your business. It's always good to "know the ropes".

If you use Facebook, and like it, it can be a good place for your business. If you are in the business of doing anything that shows your face, you should be there. Motivational speakers, actors, etc. can get a lot of great exposure on Facebook. If your business is involved with entertainment, or parties, by all means, get on Facebook! If you are selling flowers for weddings, it may be the very best place to be.

If your business is of a more mundane type, for example, you sell industrial widgets for heavy-duty iron-ore refining, Facebook is not the place to be. Facebook posts should be about how you are going to be performing at a comedy club this weekend, not the new furnace in your plant in Cincinnati. So, think about your business, you should be able to decide for yourself.

How to delete an entire photo album in Facebook

To delete an album of photos on Facebook, go to Edit Album Info at the bottom left of the page of the album you want to delete.

That will take you to another window, with a series of tabs along the top which includes Delete. Click on that, Facebook will ask you if you really want to, and the entire album is gone!
